Physics - The Key To The Best Golf Swings

from:

Ever thought about the science behind your golf swing? Or what
the perfect swing is all about?

A proper golf swing has a great influence on your golf game. The
golf swing has everything to do with physics, from gravity to
the flex of the shaft and is the perfect example of angular
motion. The twisting swing creates a torque force on the golf
club, which changes the angular speed of the club, producing the
rotation.

Most club heads have about the same weight, so the key to being
able to hit the long ball resides in the club head speed. How
far you will hit the ball depends on the golf club velocity,
because the faster the club is going at the bottom of the swing,
the more kinetic energy will be sent from the club head to the
ball.

Usually, professional golfers record a club head speed of 100
mph at the bottom of their swing. Tiger Woods, however, can
achieve a speed of 125 mph. According to a research study
performed by Raymond Penner, a scientist at Malaspina
University-College in British Columbia, there is an optimum lie
angle (the angle between club shaft and club face) of a golf
driver, which depends on the club head speed. For instance, he
concluded that a 7.5 degree lie angle will give Tiger Woods the
chance to maximize his drive while other golfers who swing
slower would probably use a club with a lie angle closer to 20
degrees.

People usually try to hit a ball harder by snapping their wrists
at the bottom of the swing. Theodore Jorensen, a golf expert,
says that although this may feel like getting more power out of
the swing, this actually slows the club head down.

So, the question is, how can Tiger Woods, a man who is six-inch
tall and weights only 158 pounds, have one of the longest drives
amongst all professional golf players? The secret is all about
being able to focus and preserve the energy in his swing through
very careful and precise technique.

Let's explore 4 key elements of Tiger Woods' swing:

1. Woods uses his flexibility at the back of his swing, reaching
far back and extending his range of motion while keeping his
rotating body over his right leg. 2. As he starts his swing,
Woods creates the club head speed through a fast turn of his
body and pressing his right leg forward. Throughout his swing,
Woods wastes little energy by maintaining his position above the
ball. 3. Driving through the ball, Woods is using his hips,
shoulders and wrists in order to focus his entire force and
build a high initial ball speed. Within 2 feet off the golf tee,
the ball is flying at approx. 180 miles per hour, which is 20
mph faster than the average tour pro. 4. Finally, Woods is
completing a long and smooth club head rotation, by letting the
club head's momentum to extend his follow-through far around his
back. In most cases, when we come to understand the simple parts
of an allegedly complex process, we have miraculously figured
out what we need to do next to improve ourselves. Pick something
small and work on it, own it, and then move on. Focus and the
results will be out sooner that you think. Cheers Jedd.
